Are there parental controls for Janitor AI?
The short answer
There are none, and that fact is the answer. Janitor AI is an adults-only platform: its terms restrict it to users 18 and over, its guidelines permit adult content between consenting adult characters, and since 15 June 2026 users on UK internet connections must pass a one-time age verification to use it at all.
So if your teenager is on it, the useful question isn't which setting to flip. It's how they're getting in, what the appeal is, and what you want to do about both. That's what this page covers.
What Janitor AI is
Janitor AI is a character-chat platform: users create AI companion characters, publish them, and roleplay with each other's creations. It's operated by JanitorAI Inc., a US company, and it sits at the harder-edged end of the category Character.AI made famous. The crucial difference: Character.AI at least attempts an under-18 experience; Janitor AI doesn't have one, because under-18s are banned from the platform entirely.
Why there are no parental controls
Janitor AI's Terms of Service state the platform “is intended solely for users who are at least 18 years of age” and prohibit under-18s from creating an account (terms last updated June 2026). Its moderation rules go further: accounts reasonably suspected of being under 18 are permanently banned. A platform whose answer to teenagers is a ban has no reason to build linked parent accounts, activity reports or a teen mode, and it hasn't: none of the documents we reviewed for our assessment (terms, privacy policy, community guidelines and help centre, July 2026) describes any parental feature.
The same documents are open about the content: adult content between consenting adult characters is permitted, with listed categories prohibited. Chat conversations are collected and may be used for the operator's research and development, per its privacy policy.
The UK age-verification change
Since 15 June 2026, users connecting from UK internet addresses must pass a one-time age check through k-ID, the provider also used by Discord and Snapchat, choosing between facial age estimation, an ID scan or AgeKey; Janitor receives only a yes/no over-18 answer. That's the platform complying with the Online Safety Act, and it changes the practical picture: a UK teenager shouldn't be able to simply sign up any more.
Treat it as a barrier, not a guarantee: the check is tied to UK connections and teenagers are inventive. If your child is using Janitor AI today, that fact itself is worth acting on.
If your teen uses it anyway
Start from what it means: this isn't a platform with a weak teen mode, it's one whose own rules say your child shouldn't have an account at all, and where adult roleplay is the product working as intended. That's worth saying to them plainly, without theatrics.
- Ask about the appeal before removing the access. For most teens it's character roleplay and creative writing, the same pull as Character.AI, and mockery teaches concealment.
- The attachment patterns matter more than any single chat: secrecy beyond normal privacy, distress when they can't get to it, sessions migrating past midnight.
- Device-level tools can block the site or bound the hours, and that's a legitimate call for an 18+ platform in a way it isn't for ChatGPT.
- If what you find touches self-harm or sexual content involving your child, that's a safeguarding conversation, not a settings one; your GP and YoungMinds are better next steps than any app.
PolyBuzz and SpicyChat: the same answer
The two platforms teenagers mention alongside Janitor AI run the same way. PolyBuzz's terms set a minimum age of 18 worldwide, with UK users facing mandatory age verification through Ondato or Yoti, citing the same Online Safety Act. SpicyChat's guidelines also say all users must be 18 or over; its UK verification gates only NSFW content, unverified users keep access to the rest, and its own FAQ states that all “SFW” chatbots can still engage in NSFW roleplay. We found no parental feature documented on either (both checked July 2026).
