Does Google Family Link monitor AI chats?
The short answer
No. Family Link can limit screen time, approve app downloads and gate Gemini access by age, but it has no visibility into what's said in any AI conversation, on Gemini, ChatGPT, Character.AI or anywhere else.
That's not a flaw, it's a different job. Family Link manages devices; the question it can't answer is the one AI raises: what is my child actually talking to it about?
What Family Link genuinely does well
It's free, it's built in, and for device-level control it's the sensible default: screen-time schedules, app approval, content filters for Google services, and age-gating for Gemini. If your child has an Android phone, you should probably have it set up regardless of anything else on this page.
The AI blind spot
Every device-level tool shares it: to a screen-time app, two hours on Character.AI is indistinguishable from two hours on Duolingo. It can tell you the app was open; it cannot tell you whether that was creative writing or a conversation that should worry you. Blocking is its only lever, and blocking AI outright gets harder to justify every school year: these are tools your child will use for homework now and work later.
What fills the gap
Conversation-level visibility: knowing the topics and patterns of AI use without reading the words. That's the layer Halo Aware provides, on the computer your child uses, across twelve AI platforms including the companion apps. The two layers stack well: Family Link manages the phone and screen time, Halo Aware tells you what the AI conversations were actually about, and neither hands you transcripts.
A fair comparison
If your only concern is time and app access, Family Link alone is enough, and it's free. Halo Aware earns its £4.99 when the question changes from how long to what about: topic summaries, dependency patterns, and serious-risk alerts with a suggested way to talk about it. Free for one child on ChatGPT, so you can see whether the answer is worth anything to your family before paying.
