Is Mistral Le Chat safe for kids?
Under our published methodology, Mistral's Le Chat (renamed Vibe in May 2026) assesses as a utility-framed assistant from an EU operator: its terms set a 13+ minimum age, chats are kept only until the user deletes them, and model training on free-tier conversations can be switched off in-account. We found no age assurance, distinct under-18 experience or parental controls in the documents checked 2026-07-29, so oversight rests on the account's own settings.

How it scored
Each dimension is scored 0–4 against published anchors and must cite the evidence below. The overall score is weighted arithmetic, not judgement calls.
| Dimension | Score | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Content safety×25 | 3/4 | e5, e6, e2Usage policy prohibits self-harm and suicide content and has a zero-tolerance CSAM rule with law-enforcement reporting (e5, e6); the terms reference automated moderation (e2). We found no published minor-specific safeguards or crisis-response protocol, holding the score below the top anchor. |
| Age controls×20 | 2/4 | e1Terms set 13+ with parental permission where required and warn that violating accounts are deleted (e1), but this is self-declared: we found no age assurance mechanism and no distinct under-18 experience in the documents checked 2026-07-29. |
| Data practices×20 | 3/4 | e2, e3, e4, e8GDPR-native French operator (e8): chats kept until the user deletes them (e4); paid tiers excluded from training by default, free tier has an in-account opt-out (e2, e3). No minor-specific protections found beyond a US state-law no-sale/no-targeting statement for under-18s, short of the top anchor. |
| Design pressure×15 | 4/4 | e7Framed as a utility agent for work and coding; the May 2026 rename to Vibe reinforced the productivity framing (e7). We found no companion, romance, or re-engagement mechanics in the consumer documents checked 2026-07-29. |
| Parental visibility×10 | 3/4 | e10, e7We found no parental controls or family features in the documents checked 2026-07-29. The product runs on the open web at chat.mistral.ai (e10, e7), a browser surface parent-side supervision tools can reasonably oversee, consistent with how we score web-only surfaces across the cohort. |
| Track record×10 | 3/4 | e9, e3The only record found is a February 2025 GDPR complaint to France's CNIL over Le Chat, with no published regulator decision (e9); current terms provide an in-account training opt-out (e3). No minors-safety incidents, lawsuits or regulator action were found (searched 2026-07-29). |
