Supervision advised44/100for under-18 use

Is DeepSeek safe for kids?

Under our published methodology, DeepSeek rates weakly for under-18 use: its terms state the service is 'primarily intended for adults' with no age verification we could find, chats are used for model training by default, data is stored in China, and Italy's data-protection regulator imposed an immediate processing limitation in January 2025. It is a utility assistant without companion-style design pressure, and its open web chat surface can be supervised by parent-side tools.

How it scored

Each dimension is scored 0–4 against published anchors and must cite the evidence below. The overall score is weighted arithmetic, not judgement calls.

DimensionScoreEvidence
Content safety×252/4e2, e3The terms prohibit sexual or explicit content and content that exploits or harms minors (e2), and state DeepSeek operates risk-filtering mechanisms (e3). But we found no published self-harm or crisis-response protocol and no minor-specific moderation or enforcement policy (checked 2026-07-29).
Age controls×201/4e1, e4The terms say the service is 'primarily intended for adults', with under-18 use only with guardian consent (e1); the privacy policy says it is not aimed at children (e4). The published policies describe no age-verification mechanism or distinct under-18 experience; any gate is self-declaration only.
Data practices×201/4e5, e6, e7, e8, e4User inputs and chat history train DeepSeek's models (e5), with a stated opt-out right (e6) and in-settings chat deletion (e7). But training is default-on, retention is account-lifetime and open-ended (e7), data is stored in China (e8), and no minor-specific data protections are described (e4).
Design pressure×153/4e2Utility assistant framing; the terms expressly ban sexual chatbots and personas designed to appeal to under-18s (e2). We found no romantic-companion features or re-engagement mechanics in the published product materials, though in-app engagement design was not audited.
Parental visibility×103/4e10, e1, e4No native parental controls or family features appear in the published policies (e1, e4). An open web chat a parent-side tool can supervise: Halo Aware's extension ships a dedicated DeepSeek capture module, with capture proven across all 9 interaction paths against the harvested interface (e10).
Track record×101/4e9Italy's Garante imposed an urgent limitation on processing Italian users' data on 30 January 2025 and opened an investigation (e9); we found no dated remediation of that order. We found no court or major-outlet record of incidents specifically involving minors (checked 2026-07-29).
